Microsoft should really try to make Windows Backup more robust by allowing it to skip files that it cannot back up, but that's another story. The error is: Windows Backup failed while trying to read from the shadow copy on one of the volumes being backed up. Therefore I could delete it, and maybe that would resolve the problem. Try the create "system image backup". They will have a folder called "backup" and then place all their files in that directory in Windows 7, then attache the USB drive and then copy stuff over.
When the Services page is open, scroll the page to find Volume Shadow Copy and Backup service. 2. To workaround this I have seen folks go a little more on the manual process side. So this is what I did as you can see below, after this the backup did not fail again.
