I did exactly the same thing as you just now with my external hdd and I got the error - it's definitely a bug. Turns out my next best option (without hunting for other software) was to use Windows Media Player 11. This look like a straight bug in WMP, maybe a registry default not being setup on the upgrade. So in Media Center settings I stopped it from scanning all Music folders.
